Space Seeds and Survival Skills!

The space seeds have landed! We are all very excited to be involved with this national experiment.  The Year 5s, led by Mrs Dixon, have been responsible for planting and looking after the seeds which have already started to germinate. They are growing in the wet area of class 4, do come and have a look and see whether you think the blue or red seeds have been up in Space with Tim Peake!!! Do make your own prediction, staff have all had a go along with the children. Predictions are varied but I definitely like those about the seeds growing upside down due to the gravity difference in space!

The new topic for Year 4 is Solids, Liquids and Gases. We had great fun comparing different solids and liquids. The questions and discussion points that came out from toothpaste were certainly interesting to listen to!

Orienteering
As part of our outdoor learning linked to our theme, we are developing our orienteering skills. This activity taught us how special codes are used as markers at each place to check that the correct place has been visited. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the professional orienteering punchers but we did have felt tip pens which did the job just as well!

Hazards
PSHE objectives run through our theme this term and this week we have been identifying dangers and hazards that we could encounter when faced with survival on a deserted island then we assessed the risk factor. Ideas ranged from: cliff edges, active volcanoes, falling coconuts and man-eating wildlife!

Class 4 are such an arty bunch! I wanted to share the finished art work of ALL class 4. As my last blog explained, our art work was inspired by ‘The Great Wave’ and you can see for yourselves just how brilliant each and every finished piece of art work is. I am so proud of every single child and just love how they are all unique.

Home Learning
Home Learning has continued to astound me with the varied ways that children have displayed their Desert Island Survival Kit. Maybe some of these things will be useful for our survival day trip coming up in a couple of weeks. Children all seemed very excited about this when I told them, although a little disappointed when they were told we weren’t going to an actual desert island and we would not be camping overnight!!!!

  2. The space seeds are growing and I think the space seeds will grow higher because space is above that's what I think and I think the space seeds are red.

  3. I am really glad that we are doing orienteering in P.E. because it is so fun and I love following a map to different places. I think that the seeds that have been in space will grow the same as the seeds from Earth because astronauts that have been into space still grow the same when they come back. I wonder who's prediction will be right. JB

  4. I liked doing the orienteering because it is a different type of PE. Also I like learning about solids, liquids and gases. I like the book I am reading on bug club: Rat island.

    1. I am pleased you are enjoying your learning and great to hear about your bug club book too. Perhaps you can tell us about it in class and try to encourage some others to read it too.
